This measurement is primarily based on the detection of the radioactive isotope K-40
There are various methods for realizing the detection, based on the type of radiation.
The solutions from RGI are suitable for use in the field and in the laboratory.
K-40 (40K) is a radioactive potassium isotope with a very long half-life of 1.251 × 10⁹ years, which is only 0.012% (120 ppm) of the total amount of potassium found in nature, but because of its characteristics it is very suitable for determining the potassium content is.
The K-40 isotope emits 2 different types of rays:
● ß particles are electrons and therefore cannot irradiate large layers of material
● γ-rays are electromagnetic waves like X-rays and can penetrate walls.
The different types of radiation require different measurement methods and thus a different type of detector:
● γ-radiation - scintillation counter with NaJ crystal
● ß-particle - counter tube or scintillation counter
