Laboratory potassium concentration measuring system

Description

LABKAM  is designed as a potassium content measuring device for laboratory use and measures the natural beta radiation.

A  plastic scintillator is used for this.

In  contrast to the counter tubes (Geiger counter), there is no need to protect the tube filled with ionizing gas.

This  gives the device more mechanical resistance to e.g. Vibrations.

Even  if the amount of material is not corrected, it is absolutely necessary to keep the distance between the detector and the measuring surface constant by evenly filling the sample trays.

Measuring principle

The  radiometric determination of the potassium content can in principle be carried out in two ways: measurement of the γ or β radiation.

The  γ-measurement requires either a considerable amount of material to address the detector or additional measurement to correct the changed amount of material.

With  the β-measurement, the thickness of the saturation layer is less than 5 mm and no quantity correction is required.

By  measuring the radiation of the natural isotope K40, one can determine the potassium content - based on the constant half-life and equal distribution of the isotope.

This  can be done using two working modes:
● Measurement via the microcontroller - all necessary steps are controlled via the membrane keyboard of the microcontroller and results are read on the display.
● Measurement via PC with Windows - All necessary steps are controlled on the PC with special measurement software and results are output on the monitor. The microcontroller only transmits the recorded data, but does not carry out any calculations.

RGI

Micro controller

is  a modified micro computer of the POCON 21 type, equipped with the software for measuring the potassium content, which can be adapted for both suspensions and dry substances.

The  measurement takes place in KCl or in K2O. Up to 20 data records can be used for the regression.

As  already described above, the microcontroller allows two working modes:
● measurement in the microcontroller or
● Measurement in a PC with special RGI software.

Comment:
In the laboratory version, no output of digital / analog signals via the controller hardware is provided!

Accuracy

The  following is only about the statistical measurement error.

The  natural radiation pulse rate of K-40 is a statistical quantity. For the measurement of a certain duration one calculates the mean and standard deviation, because according to the theory the expected values ​​of the mean and the standard deviation of the sample are equal to the mean and the standard deviation of the total deviation.

The  measurement error is calculated according to the known formulas, an estimated value for the measurement error being obtained by replacing unknown quantities of the total deviation with the calculated values ​​of the sample.

In  order to get the error in K2O (or KCl) percentages, one multiplies the error in pulses by the parameter that reflects the pulses per percent and is a device property and thus obtains a value which is taken as a measurement error and during the measurement appears on the display.

It  is obvious: in order to halve the error, it is necessary to increase the measurement time by 4 times.
