Micro computer for moisture measurement

Description

NECON 21  is a processor-controlled micro computer for calculating the moisture in bulk goods and solids in combination with a neutron radiation source and the corresponding detector.

By  choosing a suitable detector for 2π or 4π geometry, the device can be optimized for the measurement task.

The  calibration provides a moisture value in percent [%]. The internal calibration table stores up to 20 reference values.

All  inputs and outputs are floating and protected against reverse polarity. The humidity value is also available as a current signal (0 / 4-20mA) with 10 bit accuracy (better than 0.5%).

The  scaling of the output current can be freely defined.

In  addition to the microwave measuring section, a distance measurement with ultrasound is used as a "light barrier"

The  raw data of the microwave sensor measuring section are processed by the evaluation computer; the measurement result is the percentage moisture in the measured material.

The  measured value can be transmitted to other evaluation devices via an analog current output (0 / 4-20mA).

Technique

Moisture  probe FD 50  consists of a detector for thermal (“slow”) neutrons and a radiation source that emits fast neutrons, which are preferably slowed down or “moderated” by water, more precisely by hydrogen.

The  number of slow neutrons detected by the detector is therefore a measure of the water content of the sample.

A calibration is necessary before the first commissioning provides the coefficients for calculating the moisture as a function of the neutron count rate of the detector, which also compensates for environmental and sample-dependent effects.

The  moisture is measured continuously. The measured value is a moving average over a selectable averaging time, which represents a compromise between good accuracy (long averaging time) and the time resolution of the signal (short averaging time) and can therefore be individually adjusted for the respective measurement task.
