Detect bulk goods in the flow

is  one of the most difficult measuring tasks for which there are hardly any solutions besides conventional mechanical weighing systems.

Product specification

Microwave sensor for determining the mass flow

Description

The sensors DR-24, DR-42 or DR-120 form together with the evaluation unit FLOCON 21 a flow measurement system for many industrial applications in the transport of dry solids / bulk materials (sand, powder, dust) inside pipes (by means of pneumatic transport or in applications with free falling material).

The  measured variables are speed and mass flow, both can be output at 0 / 4-20mA current outputs.

Depending  on the application, the system can also measure the density or the total mass transported. In addition, the system can be programmed in such a way that, after receiving a start signal, it measures the total mass transported and signals that a preset mass value has been reached at the digital output.

Measuring principle

The  pneumatic transport of fine-grained bulk materials in pipelines is widely used in all industrial areas, but their mass determination has been a problem so far.

The  value to be determined is the weight in a unit of time or the reaching of a predetermined mass, as well an indication in mass / time unit or mass and alarm is required.

The  physical principle of speed determination is well known: the Doppler effect.

Everyone  knows this: If a vehicle is noisy, e.g. with horn coming towards us, the pitch changes at the time the vehicle passes us.

What  is happening? The sound waves are compressed or pulled apart at speed.

Everyone  is also aware that the police use radar equipment to determine the speed of our cars.

The  functionality of the DR-xxx sensors is based on the use of the Doppler effect by means of microwaves.

RGI

Technique

The  microwave signal from DR-xxx is reflected separately from each grain of the material according to its speed and mass, so the return signal ultimately contains the information about the speed and quantity of the material, while the frequency shift is proportional to the speed, and the amplitude clearly depends on the amount of material.

By  applying the Doppler principle, only the difference frequency between the transmit and receive signals is evaluated, what also means that this method measures relatively sensitively and is not very sensitive to external influences.

The  signal only has to be recorded, processed and displayed by a corresponding evaluation unit.
