General

Density is an important process parameter in many areas

Technique

How the density can be determined using non-contact measurement methods

Solution

RGI offers you these solutions for density measurement

Your specialists for non-contact measurements

As  an international active and renowned manufacturer, supplier and service provider for devices, systems and systems for the contactless detection of various process parameters (e.g. density and humidity) mainly of bulk materials (e.g. coal and potassium salt) we want to offer our customers the most effective solutions for their processes.

The  possible technical solutions are ultimately defined by analyzing the customer processes and the operating conditions on site. You can find out how these can look in this section.

Why measure the density?

In  many industrial processes, the density - either the specific density or the bulk density - is required to infer other process parameters.

So  you can use the density e.g. measure the concentration of a two-substance mixture or the solids content during transport through pipelines continuously in an ongoing process.

Radiometric density measurement

This  principle is based on the absorption measurement.

The  result is influenced by the average material density between the detector and the radiation source.

All  parts that are in the measuring beam but do not change during operation are calibrated.

Since  only the measuring medium changes, the density can be deduced perfectly.

It  is important that this is the average density.

So  you can infer from the measured value on different sizes:
● Specific density
● Solid concentration (coal, ore, salt)
● Mixing concentrations (acids, bases, sugar content)

How does the measurement work?

An  electromagnetic wave of length and energy, which also has hard X-rays, is weakened as it passes through matter according to its density.

In  order to obtain such a simple radiation source, artificially produced radioactive metal or metal oxide is welded into a high-security stainless steel capsule that has been tested in many ways.

The  radiation can penetrate the capsule wall so that the radioactive material can remain safely in the capsule forever.

Where can be measured?

constant measuring path is necessary in order to be able to clearly conclude the density.

The  easiest way to realise this is on a pipe, but this condition can also be achieved in a tank or bunker by constructive measures.

In  any case, the measurement remains contactless: neither the radiation source nor the detector come into contact with the medium.
